IBM trash-talks all those other chipsters with its latest breakthrough, an optical transceiver chipset that can accomplish the technological equivalent of cramming a basketball through a garden hose. The trick here is moving data through fiber optic cables at 160GB per second; that's eight times faster than today's optical components can do.

IBM this week announced a breakthrough in microprocessor design that will greatly improve the performance of processors, particularly multicore processors.

The breakthrough relates to the memory used in a Level 1, or L1 cache used in microprocessors. It's the first level of CPU instruction cache for storing the most recent instructions.

Operator lets you combine pieces of information on Web sites with applications in ways that are useful. For instance, Flickr + Google Maps, Upcoming.org + Google Calendar, Yahoo! Local + your address book, and many more possibilities and permutations. All of these scenarios are possible due to Microformats, an emerging standard for injecting semantics into HTML.
